Diary entrys

Diary entry week 1: This week I have started to analyse my research of five front covers, five contents pages and five double page spreads. I have started to analyse DJ magazines as that is what I think I am going to base my magazine on. Next week I will be doing my initial ideas.

Diary entry week 2: This week I have started to do my initial ideas, this is a crucial part of the project as it lets me see what sort of magazine I am going to base it on, I have stated what I am going to base my ideas around for example what sort of layout I am going to use. Next week I will be starting my audience research.

Diary entry week 3: This week I have started my audience research, I have handed around some questionnaires which I completed to my target audience. I have done this so that I can see what my target audience like to read and look at, I have also converted my data into graphs and started to analyse the graphs.

Diary entry week 4: This week I have been out with a camera from the media department to get some of my first images for my draft of my magazine, next week I will be editing them.

Diary entry week 5: This week I have uploaded my photos onto the computer and edited them, I have also got the motion of the magazine moving as I am almost finished my draft.

Diary entry week 6: This week I have finished my draft and have been given feedback from peers in my class, I have acted on some of the useful feedback, for example I was told that my images were too blurry so I am going to re-take them, also I was told that I needed more information and stories on my contents page so I have added more.

Diary entry week 7: This week I have been out taking my new photos, I had to make sure that they were not distorted like they were last time as this will result in deducted marks. I have put them into photo-shop and started to edit them.

Diary entry week 8: This week I have almost finished my magazine and will upload it onto my blogger with all of the other things that need to be on there.

Double Page Spread analysis

Double Page Spread analysis-M8 Kate lawler

This double page spread is very effective, it uses a colour scheme of three, it uses yellow pink and white, which work and blend very well together so it is easy to read for the viewer. The picture they have used is effective as the woman is wearing a set of headphones because it is a DJ magazine. It has the main text that they want to catch the readers eye in black as it goes well on the black background. The other minor texts like the quotations from Kate Lawler (image) are in pink as they are not as crucial as the important text. The layout is quite informal as it has text all over the place with the bold title “RESPECT THE LAW” darting across the page. I think that M8 have gone for the informal approach is because it is an alternative approach and catches the viewers eye more.

Double page spread analysis – Lost in space

This is a very different double page spread which is possibly one of my favourites as the image they use is brilliant in my opinion, I think this because it suits their target audience perfectly with the DJ in the background and the club lights beaming into the readers eyes. The layout is very informal but it works because there is text everywhere but it is very easy to use and there are little images of people dancing. This only uses two main colours (white and black) which gives it an authentic touch as most of the other double page spreads have three colours. Personally this is my favourite double page spread so far and I will try to use a similar image to this with a similar layout to it for example the large title across the page.

Double page spread analysis-Do not Disturb

This double page spread is also informal, more so than the others, personally I do not find this double
page spread very effective as everything is all over the place, for example the text is all over the left side and the middle of the page, it is also in a font that is rather hard to read. Another thing is that the text is squashed between a set of images, this makes it hard to read as the reader may get side-tracked to looking at the images rather than reading the information. The double page spread follows a colour scheme of three code. The colours are white, yellow and black, the normal text is easy to read. In my double page spread I don't think I will be trying to follow the codes and conventions of this one as I do not think that it is very effective.

Double Page Spread Analysis- Primed and ready

This double page spread is different from the others as it takes a formal approach. It only has two main colours which are white and black, these are quite formal colours. The text is laid out so that it is easy to read on the white background. The image is very plain as this double page spread is not aimed at the DJ fans target audience. The title is plain and easy to read which I like. This double page spread is not one to get excited about however I think it is effective to its target audience, however I do not think that I will be following any of its trends as it wouldn't appeal to the DJ genre target population.

Double page spread analysis-- the ultimate accolade

This contents page is quite smart, it takes a blocky approach which I think is effective towards the reader. It clearly displays the numbers outlined in a red box which clearly states what is where in this magazine. The images used are quite effective as it catches the viewer’s eye. It catches the readers eye and clearly shows what articles the pictures are on. The text is laid out down the right hand side of the contents page which makes it easy to read on the yellow background as the text is a visible black. This contents page is very effective however I do not think that I will follow the three colour scheme of yellow, red and black because I think that the colours are quite sickly however they are effective. The images are nice but also I will not be following the trend as I think I am going to have an image dominated approach on my contents page.

Contents page analysis

Contents analysis-DJ

This magazine takes a blocky approach to its contents page, I think they have done this for a variety as they used image dominated on the front cover. I like how they have stuck to the same colour scheme as well as the images and text sectioned off from each other so that it doesn't look messy. It also clearly displays the page numbers that the articles are on, I will also do this and clearly display where and what my articles are about on my contents. I think that by using 5 images it keeps the contents page interesting. This contents page also has another section (on the left hand side in the black section) where it tells you exclusive features in this magazine, I think that this would be effective as it stands out because of the black background with the white text. In my opinion this contents page is very effective, however I am not to keen on the three colours they have chosen to do, I think I may do some of the things it does like have a lot of images to keep the reader interested.

Contents analysis-Mix mag the DJ revolution

This contents page takes a different approach as it is image dominated, I also like the image dominated look as well as the blocky. This magazine is slightly less informal as it is image dominated and there is text down the side. I think that this layout is very effective though because it has the page numbers again clearly displayed in bold yellow writing, also the text next to it is white and bold to catch the readers eye. The picture that they have used is crucial, I will not personally be using an image like this because I think that viewers would find it quite intimidating and a man with trainers around his neck and gold teeth does not represent the genre of DJ music. It has a very classy approach in its other images because they have faded the colour out in the bottom left hand image to give it a retro look which I quite like as it is different.

Contents Analysis-Mixmag celebrity DJ's

This contents page takes an image dominated approach, the picture they use suits the type of magazine it is as it is a crowd of people dancing, I think this image is effective because it is the first thing the viewer sees when they turn to the contents page. Although this contents page is image dominated they have kept it quite formal as they have the text ordered down the side and bottom of the page. The way that mixmag has ordered this contents page works. Another feature that I think is effective is that it advertises a free CD in the bottom left hand side of the contents page, small conventions like this are essential and I will probably take a similar approach to this contents page. As well as advertising the free CD it tells you what songs are on it which is a clever idea in my opinion. Personally I think that this contents page is very effective because the image dominated layout is very effective, I may use a similar image to this on my contents page of my magazine.

Contents analysis-mixmag who is the greatest DJ ever

This contents page is very similar to the other mixmag one as it is also image dominated with the text to the right hand side, it has kept a formal approach again which I like. It has also advertised the free CD at the bottom section of the page. The image again is very good as it shows people clubbing and having a good time. The text to the side telling you what is inside has been made into bold large writing text to grasp the readers eye. I like the three colour scheme they have used in this contents page as it is plain and simple however it is eye catching as it is black background with white text and for crucial text that they want you to read they have made that yellow so that it stands out more on the black background. I will take a similar approach to this contents page, plain and simple but eye catching and effective.

Front page analysis

Front cover analysis-M8
As you can see this magazine has an image dominated front cover, this is used to grab the viewers eye, to make this magazine stand out from all of the others. Also you can see that it has what is inside the magazine in large writing down the left hand side of the magazine front cover. They have cleverly made it into a different colour (red) so that it stands out more and is easier to notice. This magazine has used a typical 3 colour scheme because it generally looks better if there is more than one colour, in this magazine it uses pink, white and yellow as its three main colours. This magazine advertises how cheap it is at only £1, this may sway the viewer to buy it. It uses a large title in the centre of the page to also get the viewers eye as it says in bold, white writing “Kate LAWLER...laying down the law!”, they will be doing this for effect, to make the viewer more interested.
For my magazine I may take a similar approach as I am going to have an image dominated, 3 colour scheme front cover. I also am quite fond of the large title grasping the viewers eye in the centre of the page so I may also do that in my magazine.

Front cover analysis-DJ

This magazine has a popular image dominated look. You can see clearly what type of genre this magazine is as it displays its nam

e “DJ” in the top left hand corner in bright pink writing. This magazine also follows the 3 colour scheme trend, it uses a navy blue, pink and yellow style, personally I would not use this colour scheme as it seems quite boring and I personally do not find this front cover particularly nice to look at. However they have used the image of the queens head cleverly as they have edited it by putting DJ headphones aroun

d her neck, this image is very effective. This magazine also displays what it has inside the magazine around the image in bright yellow and white writing to stand out on the navy blue background. It has made the writing bold and in a large font so that it stands out to the viewer. One section of the front cover on this magazine which I may take a similar approach to is the plus section in the bottom left hand corner of the front cover, I may do this as I think it is eye catching however it does not dominate over the other writing.

Front Cover analysis – mixmag celebrity DJ's
This magazine takes a different approach to the others I have analysed, this is because although it is image dominated it has quite a large amount of text around the image as the other magazines just stuck to a few headlines. Although this is the genre of music that I think I am going to do I will not copy the style of this one as it quite feminine in comparison to the others as its three main colours are pink, white and black. Also the image they have used is a rather feminine looking woman holding a small dog. It also varies it a little bit as it has back headphones, with decks in the bottom left hand corner. I think they have tried to mix it up male and female because they do not want to single out a specific target audience. This specific magazine also offers a free CD with the magazine, it shows this in black bold writing on the left hand side of the front cover. I may include a similar free gift with my magazine as it entices readers to buy your magazine

Mix Mag the DJ revolution

This magazine bases its front cover on one soul image, it is an intriguing image of a DJ pointing in front of a large crowd up to the sky. It uses numerous colours, blue, orange and white, again taking the normal approach of having three specific colours that it sticks to so that it is not a strain on the viewers eyes. It uses a smooth font as the title to demonstrate the approach it takes towards music. Mixmag has organised its layout quite well as it has its articles laid out towards the side of the page. It uses bold orange writing to advertise the articles in the magazine. It uses a clever effect in the text and articles it uses, this effect is embossing the text, to make the text stand out more to the viewer. Another point is that the image they are using you cannot see the DJ’s face, this is because this genre of music is just about the music and not the appearance of the DJ, people who buy this magazine will buy it because of the music.
In my own magazine I think I will take a similar approach to Mixmag as I will use the three colour scheme and also will have big bold writing as my title. I will do this as I think it is effective for the viewer and it is essential to have a bold title so the viewer can see what they are reading.

Mixmag – who’s the greatest DJ or all time

This mixmag magazine follows the usual theme of having three colours, the three colours are grey, orange and black. The title is black which stands out on the grey background. It is also in a large font which grasps the readers eye. Again the title is smooth which suggests that the magazine has a laid back approach to music. It also has an image on the front cover, it is a group of DJ’s with one of them reaching for the sky, similar to the other mix mag magazine with the DJ pointing to the sky. I think this image is crucial as it is very relevant to the readers. It has a very large headline on the front cover, it says in huge front “who is the greatest DJ of all time” I think they do this so that it is clearly showing the genre of the magazine. It has essential little details that every magazine needs for example the barcode. Also it has a very small image in the top right hand corner, it says “DON’T STAY IN, your clubbing plans sorted every month”. Also all of the text is embossed on the front cover. This also catches the readers eye as it has a very thick orange line next to it.’ Overall I think this magazine is very effective and I am possible going to use the grey background as I think it has a positive

Throughout the project of creating my school magazine I tried to use little things to make it stand out to the crowd. For example on my front page I used a box behind my title and toned down the opacity to make it slightly transparent so that the title would stand out to the reader more. I followed the general trend of the other magazines on my front cover which is basically having a large image on the background and text and exclusive articles on the front page. However on my contents page I did not follow the general trend as I based that on an image aswell which other magazines did not. This I believe gave my magazine an authentic touch which I thought would appeal to a reader. I found the fusion magazine inspiring so I vaguely based my magazine on it as I had one image on the front with text over the top of the image.

I have learnt a lot about using the technology in this project, for example I have learnt how to use the camera focus and zoom, this was crucial in my images as they had to be focused properly to have full effect. In both of the images I used I made sure that it had natural lighting in it so that it looked more professional and like the other magazines. When constructing my magazine front cover and contents page I used many tools in Photoshop, for example I had to use the cloning tool on some of my images to get rid of patchy bits on my image, also I used the duplication tool so that I could size the image up properly. I had to make sure when resizing my images that I held the shift button so that my image did not become distorted. As I stated before I also used the opacity tool, I toned it down to make my text stand out to the reader more.
